Reflective Practice

Level 4 Skills Workshop – Reflective Practice

Why Reflect?

During your time at university, you will continue to increase your knowledge and understanding of your subject area.

The process of Recording, Reflecting and Planning helps designers build, develop and review their knowledge and understanding.

What is Reflection?

Reflection is defined by learning and thinking and may occur in two ways:

 ·       Reflecting in order to learn something

·       Learning as a result of reflecting

Reflection is a representation of the thought process and may use a variety of mediums such as drawing, writing and digital media as a means of expressing or illustrating this process.

 How do we reflect?

Factors that may help shape your reflection could be:

A need to organise various elements of knowledge or visual information, which until reflected upon seem fragmented. This may be visual research such as photographs documenting your process.

A need to reflect and evaluate what has been learnt in order to progress further on a project

As you progress throughout your course you will need to utilize various ways of reflecting, by becoming aware of how and actively engaging in becoming a reflective practitioner you should find it easier to clarify your process.

It is important to remember that a reflective process within the context of your education should not only help ‘you’ understand either a practical or conceptual aspect of a project but should also be clear to fellow students and teaching staff.

Blogs & Reflective Practice – Task 2

·       Set up a tumblr account instructions can be found here   http://skillsws.tumblr.com/

 ·       Follow each of your group member’s blog.

IMPORTANT: Once your Blog is set up email Lee your blog address. When you email place the following title in your subject area: Skills Workshop blog / first name_surname i.e. (skillsworkshop/lee_Ford)

Using your blog post a minimum of 7 posts for each week of TASK 2.  At least 5 of your posts each week should consider the following areas.

Research / what primary and secondary research are you exploring and how is this informing your design process. Provide both visual examples and clearly annotate why you have shown these examples.

Primary research will also include testing and experimenting with processes and techniques. Documenting and reflecting on your working process often helps you identify aspects of a project  that are working well or require improvement.

Avoid using your blog as a place to simply discuss other designers, ensure your research examples and comments are meaningful and specific to your project.
